Could today's Gangsta-rap be compared to hair metal of the '80's?

I say yes becuase the music is put out there for mass consumption by the public. The music is sub par and the lyrics are about self-glorification. "Look at me, Look at me" seemed to be the theme of hair metal in the 80's and today's commercialized gangsta rap.

what are your thoughts?

maybe. depending on what they're talkin about.

They can't be compared because they are two different styles.

I disagree, hair metal in the 80's was not sub-par, or about self-glorification. Sure, some songs may be about things you dont like or agree with, but thats what free will is all about. Turn your dial to a country station or something and quit crying! 80's hair metal was kick ***! and to those who like it, so is gangsta-rap. I believe music is a personal choice, everyones taste is different.

The genres are completely different - I mean, can you really see a similarity between Snoop Dog and Bon Jovi?????? The hair bands of the 80's did not sing about shooting and killing, nor did they use extreme vulgarity in their music. Though they were considered on the edge at that time 'Cherry Pie' and 'Unskinny Bop' , or even 'Girls, Girls, Girls' are not in the same league as the gangsta rap of today. I mean, in the 80's, who didn't want to be Vince, Jon or Axel and get all the girls, drink hard and live harder? But at least they weren't delivering a message of hate, violence and death.
