When musicals are changed into movies....?

don't you just hate it when they change the songs?

I mean, go ahead, mess with the order but don't take out the fecking lyrics!!!!!!!

Just finished watching RENT on dvd and they changed "Rent".

They didn't have the whole marks mom things "Hello, Maureen your equipment won't work? ok alright I'll go" and "Maureen I'm not a theatre person" or "Ever since our wedding i'm dirt....."

There were big chunks in the song where there where no lyrics, little chunks of nothing that made me pull out my hair!!!!!!!!!! I understand they did to not mess up the order of the film but c'mon guys, make it work!!!!!!!!!!! Other than that i do like the movie..... :)

Comments? Experiences?

When musicals are changed into movies....?

Moviemakers, in their infinite wisdom, always seem to think they know better than whoever made the original a success in the first place. I was appalled at what they did to "Chorus Line."

However, sometimes they can get it right. I liked "Chicago" quite a bit.

I completely agree! Most Broadway shows turned into films have that flaw.

RENT is probably one of the better examples, though.

The musical that got changed into a movie that I found very disappointing was DREAMGIRLS ... Where should I start? I think that I will begin with the casting...

Although, I did like Jennifer Hudson as Effie, I truly that Beyonce was miss cast as Deena. I must admit that she does have the "thing" that Deena needs, but she completely over sang ALL of the songs! She totally sounded entirely too contemporary. She focused so much on the look that I believe that she forgot to do her research on what the crossover sound truly was.

Ok Mr. Jamie Foxx as Curtis was a hot mess!!! We the audience should not figure out that Curtis is a slim ball during the first scene!!!! And let閳ユ獨 not even talk about his singing! Thank goodness during When I first Saw You, we the audience could focus on the pretty pictures of Beyonce and less on Jamie's singing. Ben Harney, the original Broadway cast, was sooooo smooth in his delivery. Jamie had none of that. I think the worst part about it, is that we all know that Jamie CAN actually sing so why would he do work that wasn't his best? Terrance Howard would have made a much better Curtis.

The three songs that they added were not necessary. I Love You I Do is cute but Effie didn't need an additional song. Listen was once again too contemporary and Patience was a complete mess.

Some of the dialogue in the movie is actually sung in the show ... Like the argument in Heavy ... I was so looking forward to that show down and it was a complete disappointment. I was so relieved when It閳ユ獨 All Over began. But then I was let down because of some other choices that the movie made.

Whoever decided to make Jimmy Early a drug addict should be shot themselves! Although, I pleasantly surprised with the performance and singing that Eddie Murphy did, I felt bad that they change the integrity of that character.

One of the things that pissed me off was the fact that they completely cut down the Lorrell role!!! She is the heart of the group and the movie didn't give you an opportunity to route for her! I was sooooo disappointed! Anika Noni Rose is so talented and Ain't No Party is a show stopping number and I was looking forward to hearing her sing it!

I got to tell you, I was so excited when I heard that DREAMGIRLS was going to be a film ... But why did they have to change it? I have to tell you that I wasn't surprised that it didn't get nominated for best film ... Because at the end of the day, it wasn't! There were some wonderful moments, but the best thing about the film was Jennifer Hudson.

Now let閳ユ獨 see what they are going to do with Sweeny Todd and Nine!

Moviemakers make these changes for a couple of very good reasons:

Moviegoers are not theatregoers. People who watch movies have a shorter attention span and the need for constant gratification. They can't sit through a "musical" for too long without a song. So producers need to make certain cuts

These cuts are usually to allow for the different medium -- the parts of Rent you are referring to work well in a stage musical but may not "translate" to screen.

Also, if they introduce a new song, they can be nominated in the Song category come Oscar time.

I actually liked Rent and Chicago, but the omission of "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love" from A Chorus Line was inexcusable (and the addition of "Surprise" did not make up for it) Also "What I Did for Love" appeared to be sung by a woman about a lost boyfriend, when the play places it after Paul's career-ending knee injury and the director asks "What would you do if you couldn't do this anymore?" I guess we should be thankful, somewhat, that a larger audience is seeing a Broadway musical, albeit somewhat changed. But they don't have the stage version to compare it to. So maybe they'll come to the theatre.

what about phantom, they really messed that about, should have left it as it was directed on stage in the original london production.
