WTF is up with dudes saying that Bright Eyes is emo?

I mean... they're obviously completely un-emo... they're like indie folk. From what I've heard, their lyrics aren't even emo.

some of the lyrics from previous albums were quite depressing, about bad relationships and siblings drowning in bath tubs, but . . .

they're definitely not emo. NOT

emo has become so distorted these days, that almost any band could be considered emo.

but bright eyes is more indie-contemporary-folk, especially their newest album "cassadaga." that album comes nowhere near even the most distorted definition of emo.

and conor oberst's hair isn't emo anymore either. it's longer and kinda redneck looking, lol.

but i still love them, i own all their albums. one of the greatest bands ever, you should definitely look into them if you haven't yet.

I use to consider Bright Eyes a form of slightly emo indie folk. Sunrise Sunset and A Perfect Sonnet can be a bit emo, if you look at it the right way, and The Calendar Hung itself can be very easily interepreted as emo. Their new stuff isn't emo at all though. More political than anything.

I love Conor Oberst though... haven't seen his hair recently.

idk, it's ******* annoying tho... it's NOT EMO gawd. I guess some of the lyrics are a bit depressing, but anything that suggests emotion seems to be "emo". Some people are just idiots.

I'd have to say its because they focus primarily on lyrics. Somewhat similar to an "emo" kid and their poetry. Thats just my point of view.

Seems like we've been down this road already when you asked the identical thing regarding Death Cab For Cutie. The answer remains the same. Technically, they aren't emo but indie pop. However, they get carelessly lumped into the genre due to their quiet, wispy style. Either way, it's nothing to get bent out of shape over. If you like them, who cares what people want to categorize them as?

Bright Eyes is emo-esque. Yes, lately Conor's been leaning more to the indie-folk side of the spectrum, but the first few albums were basically emo on an acoustic guitar. Not to mention he was (and probably still is? I haven't been keeping up) on Saddle Creek in the late 90s/early 00s, which was really pushing emo and making it what it is today with bands like Cursive, The Good Life, Sorry About Dresden, etc... Basically, in the history of emo, bands like Fugazi and Embrace set the stage, then bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Modest Mouse combined it with alternative rock, then bands like Cursive and BRIGHT EYES set it up as the "scene" fad, and the current set went mainstream with it. Since then, Bright Eyes, Cursive, etc... have started straying from "emo", and are rarely called that anymore. But 7-9 years ago when it was first really gaining speed, Bright Eyes WAS commonly (and correctly) refered to as "emo".
